Unbroken begins: Born at the 2019 CrossFit Games

Unbroken is an Icelandic brand, made in Norway from fresh Norwegian salmon. We set out to create an innovative, food-first marine supplement for recovery, naturally delivering free-form amino acids and small peptides in a light, convenient format.

In 2019, we took that idea to one of the most demanding environments in sport: the CrossFit Games. We launched Unbroken with four of the world’s leading Nordic CrossFit athletes: Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson and Sara Sigmundsdóttir from Iceland, Kristin Holte from Norway and Lukas Högberg from Sweden. These were athletes training for hours every day, often across multiple sessions. They knew their bodies, they knew recovery, and they knew when something felt different.

What does it mean to go Unbroken?

The name came directly from CrossFit. To "Go Unbroken" means completing a set without stopping, maintaining the rhythm and moving from one challenge to the next. It captured exactly what we wanted the brand to stand for: keep moving, recover and be ready to go again.

The product itself started with fresh Norwegian salmon. Through enzymatic hydrolysis, the protein is broken down into naturally occurring free-form amino acids and small peptides, creating compact marine nutrition with minimal digestive demand.

The question behind Unbroken was simple: could recovery nutrition become part of training itself, rather than something that only started when the work was over?

GO UNBROKEN. KEEP MOVING.

Four Nordic athletes. One extraordinary testing ground.

To find out, we put Unbroken into the hands of athletes whose training placed extraordinary demands on recovery. Björgvin, Sara, Kristin and Lukas were among the leading names in CrossFit, training session after session, sometimes six or seven hours a day. At the 2019 CrossFit Games, Kristin finished second overall and Björgvin third.

For athletes at this level, recovery was not an abstract concept. How they recovered from one session could affect what they were able to do in the next. Each knew exactly how their body normally responded to high training loads. And each noticed something with Unbroken.

Sara Sigmundsdóttir | Iceland

For Sara, the difference was particularly relevant during high-volume training days. She had previously worried about how she would feel going into a second session after already pushing hard in the morning. With Unbroken in her routine, she described being able to recover and approach the next session differently.

“The biggest benefit was how it helped me push myself further, allowing me to add more volume and recover faster.”

Her experience went straight to the idea behind Unbroken. Recovery wasn't only about how she felt the following morning. It was also about being ready to train again later that same day.

Kristin Holte | Norway

Kristin brought two perspectives to Unbroken: elite athlete and qualified nutritionist. She was naturally sceptical of new products and needed to feel a genuine difference before something earned a place in her routine.

“As a nutritionist, I’m usually sceptical of new products, but Unbroken genuinely made a difference.”

During her competitive career, Kristin described feeling less muscle soreness and quicker recovery between sessions. Unbroken became part of her routine throughout demanding training days, from first thing in the morning to recovery between workouts.

Lukas Högberg | Sweden

For Lukas, recovery was about being able to keep pushing through demanding training blocks and competitions without holding something back for what came next. He described feeling less muscle soreness and more energy going into subsequent sessions.

“I didn’t have to hold back to save energy for a second session or a heavy training week.

For an athlete competing at the highest level, the small margins mattered.

“Unbroken made all the difference, giving me the confidence to push harder and even improve those tiny margins that count during competition.

Björgvin Karl Guðmundsson | Iceland

Björgvin gave us something beyond feedback on the product. His experience gave us the words to describe the idea we had been working towards.

When athletes train several times a day, recovery isn't simply something that happens overnight. It needs to begin while the training day is still unfolding.

Björgvin called it:

“REAL TIME RECOVERY.”

The phrase stuck because it captured Unbroken in three words. Recovery nutrition could fit before, during and immediately after activity, rather than waiting until everything was over.

Real Time Recovery was born.

From CrossFit to what comes next

CrossFit gave us the name Unbroken. Four of the world's leading Nordic CrossFit athletes put the idea to the test. And Björgvin gave us the words Real Time Recovery, a philosophy that continues to define the brand today.

Since 2019, Unbroken has grown beyond its CrossFit beginnings into cycling, endurance sport, wellness, healthy ageing and medical nutrition. But its foundations remain the same: an Icelandic brand, made in Norway from fresh Norwegian salmon, built around naturally occurring free-form amino acids and small peptides, and an idea born from the need to recover and go again.

RECOVER. BE READY. GO AGAIN.

The logo has evolved. The brand has evolved. The philosophy hasn't.

Ready for what’s next started here.

Go Unbroken.
